A CMS is a facility that separates the graphical elements of a web page’s layout from its content. Various ‘templates’ are created that provide the flexibility necessary to accommodate the different types of content in each of the sections throughout the site.

The page content is then entered into a database via an interface not dissimilar to a word processor, enabling basic formatting (such as bullets, simple tables, hyper-linking, bold and underlining) to be applied to the text entered.

When a page is subsequently viewed, the Content Management System then takes care of combining the ‘template’ site design with the textual content entered, thus producing the finished page. By recreating the page ‘on-the-fly’ each time it is viewed, it means that if in the mean time you should change the text stored in the database, the new content will be automatically displayed.
